Please read these terms carefully before using Splitmates.

1. Acceptance of Terms
By accessing or using the Splitmates website and application (the "Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, you may not use the Service.
We may update these Terms from time to time. Continued use of the Service after any changes constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years of age to use the Service. By creating an account, you represent and warrant that you meet this age requirement and that all information you provide is accurate and complete.
3. Account Responsibilities
When you create an account with Splitmates, you agree to:
- Provide accurate, current, and complete information
- Maintain the security and confidentiality of your login credentials
- Notify us immediately of any unauthorized access to your account
- Accept responsibility for all activities that occur under your account
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or that we reasonably believe are being used fraudulently.
4. How the Service Works
Splitmates is a bill-splitting platform that allows household members to create, split, and track shared expenses. The core workflow includes:
- Creating a household and inviting members
- Adding bills with split configurations (even, percentage, or custom amounts)
- Uploading receipts for transparency and verification
- Confirming individual portions before any payment is scheduled
- Automatic scheduling of payments after confirmation
5. Payment Simulation Disclaimer
Important: Splitmates currently operates with simulated payment functionality. No real money is transferred through the Service at this time. Payment features are provided for demonstration and workflow purposes only.
When real payment processing is integrated in the future, additional terms and agreements with our payment processing partners will apply. We will notify you before any real payment functionality is enabled.
6. Acceptable Use
You agree not to use the Service to:
- Violate any applicable laws or regulations
- Upload false, misleading, or fraudulent information or receipts
- Harass, abuse, or harm other users
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to other accounts or systems
- Interfere with the proper functioning of the Service
- Use automated tools to scrape, crawl, or extract data from the Service
- Upload content that infringes on intellectual property rights
7. User Content
You retain ownership of content you upload to the Service, including receipt images, bill descriptions, and household information. By uploading content, you grant Splitmates a limited, non-exclusive license to store, process, and display that content as necessary to provide the Service.
You are solely responsible for ensuring that content you upload does not violate any laws or infringe on any third-party rights.
8. Intellectual Property
The Service, including its design, code, branding, logos, and content (excluding user-generated content), is the property of Splitmates and is protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works based on the Service without our prior written consent.
9. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Splitmates and its founders, employees, and affiliates shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service, including but not limited to:
- Errors in bill calculations or split amounts
- Disputes between household members
- Loss of data or unauthorized access to your account
- Interruptions or unavailability of the Service
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied.
10. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Splitmates and its team from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including legal fees) arising from your use of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your infringement of any third-party rights.
11. Termination
You may delete your account at any time. We may also suspend or terminate your access to the Service if you violate these Terms or if we discontinue the Service.
Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately. We will delete your personal data in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
12. Governing Law
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United States, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising from these Terms or the Service shall be resolved through good-faith negotiation, and if necessary, through binding arbitration.
